The Argentine National Team has already revved up its engines for the 2026 World Cup. In their first friendly match in preparation for the upcoming World Cup, Lionel Scaloni's team won easily 2-0 against Honduras in Texas.
At the start of the match, the logic would play out: a dominant Albiceleste, controlling possession and creating the clearest opportunities, and a Central American team waiting to capitalize on a rival's mistake and launch a counterattack. In this context, the first two warnings from the national team would come at 6 minutes with a shot from outside the area by Giulano Simeone and then at 11 with a header from Lautaro Martínez in the box, both neutralized by goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar.
The match would enter a tense phase until the 33rd minute, when Giovani Lo Celso would hit a powerful shot from outside the area that struck the top of the left post. In the immediate rebound, Nicolás Tagliafico would receive a push in the box from Cristopher Meléndez, and the referee would call a penalty. The one to take the shot from 12 yards would be Toro, who would make a well-placed shot to the left that Menjivar could not reach.
Although the National Team had some chances towards the end of the first half, such as a pirouette by Lisandro Martínez that would go just over the Honduran goal, the score would not change before the break.
In the second half, both teams would make substitutions. For Scaloni's side, Rodrigo De Paul and Facundo Medina would come on for Valentín Barco and Tagliafico. The changes would have an immediate effect: at 46, Medina would send a long ball to Thiago Almada, who would find himself one-on-one with Menjivar, who would clear the ball.
Shortly after, following a great collective play with precise passing, Lautaro would assist Simeone with a backheel, who would control and push it almost past the Honduran goalkeeper for the 2-0. After the goal, both coaches would make changes. For the Albiceleste, Enzo Fernández, José Manuel López, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cristian Romero would come on for Lo Celso, Almada, Lautaro Martínez, and Lisandro Martínez.
Taking advantage of the lead, in the final stretch of the match there would be more substitutions, all involving debutants with the senior team: Nicolás Capaldo, Tomás Aranda, and Santiago Beltrán for Simeone, Exequiel Palacios, and Juan Musso, and later Joaquín Freitas for Nicolás Otamendi.
Despite having a few dangerous opportunities, such as a right-footed shot from outside the area by Aranda that Menjivar just managed to deflect for a corner, the match would end without any more goals.
After this victory, Argentina has one more preparation match before the 2026 World Cup. Next Tuesday, June 9 at 10 PM, the Albiceleste will face Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Alabama.
