The Pope Leo XIV arrived this Sunday, November 8, in Argentina and was personally received by President Javier Milei at the Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires, where the official welcome ceremony took place, marking the beginning of a historic four-day apostolic visit, the first by a Supreme Pontiff to the country in nearly four decades.
The plane that transported the head of the Catholic Church from Montevideo landed around 4:38 PM and was welcomed by a delegation led by Milei and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei. During the ceremony, the Argentine National Anthem was sung while the Pontiff greeted religious authorities, officials, and children who participated in the welcome and presented him with gifts.
The arrival of Leo XIV came after his visit to Uruguay, where he had a busy agenda that included religious celebrations and meetings with various communities. During his stay in the neighboring country, the Pope celebrated a mass before about 40,000 faithful in Paysandú and visited the Casavalle neighborhood in Montevideo, where he delivered a message about insecurity and the situation of the most vulnerable sectors.
After the reception at Aeroparque, the Supreme Pontiff headed to Plaza San Martín, where he is scheduled to pay tribute to the Liberator before moving to the Casa Rosada. There, President Milei will receive him again for a protocol ceremony in the Salón Blanco, followed by a private meeting between the two in the presidential office, one of the central moments of the first day of the visit.
