The UEFA launched one of its harshest accusations against the disastrous Gianni Infantino and confirmed that it has lost trust in the FIFA president, despite the leader withdrawing his controversial project to incorporate private investors into the organization's business. The European entity stated that Infantino's retreat is not enough to close the crisis and demanded a profound reconstruction of institutional leadership.

The conflict originated from FIFA Forward Enterprise, an initiative aimed at creating a partnership open to private capital that would manage commercial activities and events of FIFA, including the World Cup. For UEFA, the project was equivalent to “selling a part of the World Cup” without sufficient discussion with the confederations and national federations.

The entity led by Aleksander Ceferin accused Infantino of trying to advance a project that was “meager, opaque, and concocted behind the scenes.” Furthermore, it stated that the leader “lost the trust” of UEFA and “numerous other members of the football family.”

“He did not fulfill those two promises”: UEFA's central accusation

UEFA recalled that before being elected president of FIFA in 2016, Infantino built his candidacy around two central commitments: ensuring transparency and recognizing that the organization's resources belonged to its member associations.

The European response was definitive: “He did not fulfill those two promises.”

The organization stated that the proposal pushed by Infantino directly contradicted the discourse with which he arrived at the presidency. UEFA described it as a “shabby, opaque, and concocted behind the scenes” project that the leader attempted to impose without the necessary institutional debates.

The questioning was not only directed at the possible arrival of investors. The European confederation focused on the procedure used, the lack of public information about potential partners, and the risk of transferring assets of world football to private interests.

UEFA had already warned that FIFA is not the exclusive owner of the competitions it administers. In a previous statement, it was emphatic: “None of us owns football. It does not belong to FIFA to sell it.”

For Europe, international competitions, their commercial value, and their identity belong to all federations, players, clubs, and fans. For that reason, it considered that an operation of such magnitude could not be decided by a small group around Infantino.

The project's collapse was a “victory for all football”

In the face of resistance from Europe and other confederations, Infantino announced that FIFA Forward Enterprise would not move forward. Infantino communicated his decision “after having listened carefully to all points of view.”

UEFA received the withdrawal as a “victory for all football,” but immediately clarified that the reversal should not “mark the end of the story.”

The statement made it clear that the conflict no longer revolves exclusively around a commercial initiative. Europe is now questioning Infantino's leadership, his decision-making mechanisms, and the credibility of his presidency less than a year before FIFA elections.

“The proposal has been rejected,” celebrated UEFA. However, it added its most emphatic warning: “The task of restoring trust in FIFA has only just begun.”

Although Infantino eliminated the immediate cause of the dispute, UEFA demands explanations about the origin of the project, the negotiations conducted, and the potential interested investors.

The European threat that forced Infantino to retreat

The European rejection reached an unprecedented level. The 55 federations that make up UEFA had unanimously agreed to threaten not to participate in future FIFA competitions if the project was approved.

Concacaf communicated that it had “rejected the proposal,” while the Asian Confederation demanded appropriate consultations, collective dialogue, and respect for the governance structures of football.

Conmebol, for its part, requested “additional information and clarifications” and called for prioritizing sporting interests over any commercial considerations. Although some confederations chose a more cautious position, Infantino did not gain the global support he needed.

The leader was also weakened by the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, one of his main advisors. The combination of institutional rejection, public pressure, and internal fractures turned the continuity of the project into a threat to his own candidacy.

UEFA proposed using FIFA's reserves

The European entity rejected the argument that the entry of private capital was necessary to expand resources allocated for development. FIFA has reserves estimated at around USD 5 billion, so UEFA demanded to use part of those funds through the existing FIFA Forward program.

The organization proposed developing “a new method of resource distribution” that allows support for grassroots football and the 211 affiliated associations without handing over a stake in the main businesses to external investors.

The entity summarized its position with a strong metaphor: “We do not need to sell the family silverware to pay for it.”

The accusation of “blackmail” over the offered funds

The project contemplated that each federation could receive an extraordinary allocation close to USD 20 million during 2027. Additionally, the contributions planned for the 2027-2030 cycle could increase from USD 8 million to USD 20 million per association.

The president of the Norwegian Federation, Lise Klaveness, described that mechanism as “a form of blackmail” and argued that FIFA “did not need that money” from private investors.

The argument was that the economic incentives could influence small federations that depend on FIFA's contributions. UEFA considered that this distribution should be made with already available resources and through transparent procedures.

Infantino's continuity is under question

The crisis arises less than a year before the presidential elections scheduled for March 2027. Infantino seeks to remain at the helm of FIFA and, so far, is the only declared candidate, but the break with Europe could stimulate the presentation of a rival.

The situation is particularly significant because Infantino was the general secretary of UEFA and had the support of numerous European federations to reach FIFA. A decade later, the organization where he developed much of his career publicly states that it no longer trusts him.
