The president of YPF, Horacio Marín, visited the Tesla Gigafactory in Texas on Monday and signed a letter of intent with the American company to explore the development of a fast charging network for electric vehicles in Argentina.

The understanding constitutes a framework agreement that enables formal negotiations between both companies, although it does not imply concrete financial commitments.

According to the oil company, the preliminary agreement includes three main axes: the expansion of fast charging infrastructure, the development of energy storage solutions, and the implementation of technological innovation initiatives applied to the energy sector.

During the visit, Marín toured the facilities alongside Michael Snyder, Tesla's vice president of energy, and highlighted the level of development observed. “I was impressed. Technology, innovation, and execution coexist on a scale that is hard to imagine until you see it up close,” stated the head of YPF on his official X account.

The understanding between both companies is supported by the complementarity of their assets. Tesla would contribute its global network of superchargers and its industrial-scale energy storage systems, technology that it has already implemented in multiple international markets, although with limited presence in Argentina.

On its part, YPF has more than 1,600 service stations distributed throughout the country, allowing it to offer a national logistics platform.

“At YPF, we believe that the future of energy requires an integrated approach that combines infrastructure, technology, and innovation,” Marín stated in the official announcement.

The executive did not provide details on the investment amounts or the timelines for the projects under analysis. Additionally, both companies exchanged perspectives on electricity supply and potential technological developments related to the sector.

The agreement comes in a context of accelerated growth in the electric vehicle market in Argentina. Following the elimination of extrazone tariffs for the importation of hybrid and electric cars, the segment recorded a significant increase. In May, while total sales of new vehicles fell by 25% year-on-year, electrified vehicles grew by more than 300%.

In particular, pure electric vehicles reached 647 units sold that month, representing an increase of 611% compared to May 2025, when the market operated with a 35% tariff. In the first five months of the year, 3,011 electric units were sold in the country.
