Sean Parnell, the Pentagon official in charge of investigating the disastrous military withdrawal from Afghanistan ordered by the Biden administration in 2021, claimed this Wednesday to have discovered classified documents hidden in a safe.
In a video posted on social media to mark the fifth anniversary of the tragedy, Parnell stated that his team recovered "highly relevant classified documents" that were "stored and hidden in safes where they could not be found."
Parnell noted that the material should have been revealed, and that for some reason it was hidden all these years by the authorities at the Pentagon in the previous administration. The official indicated that the investigation into this military disaster is still ongoing, although he did not provide further details. "They deserve the truth about what happened regarding Afghanistan, told fully and without hesitation," he stated.
Today marks five years since the Abbey Gate bombing in 2021, in which a suicide bomber belonging to ISIS-K detonated an explosive device at the entrance of the airport in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, killing 13 U.S. service members and approximately 170 Afghan civilians.
In what was one of the greatest failures of U.S. foreign policy in recent history, Joe Biden handed Afghanistan over to the Taliban after more than two decades of war, leaving thousands of Afghan civilians and NATO troops still in the country vulnerable.
