Murat Yakin's statements after the severe defeat against the current world champion: "Unfortunately, football did not win today. It is clear that we were harmed by the referee"

In a demonstration of character and technical superiority, the Argentine National Team secured its place in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Switzerland by 3-1 at the Kansas City stadium. The team led by Lionel Scaloni had to battle for 120 minutes to break the resistance of a Swiss side that, while showing great physical effort, ultimately succumbed to the weight of history and the talent of the Albiceleste.

The match started favorably for the world champion with an early goal from Alexis Mac Allister. However, tension increased when Dan Ndoye equalized for the Europeans in the 67th minute. The parity seemed to give the Swiss a boost, but sporting justice made its presence felt in the 72nd minute to punish dishonesty: forward Breel Embolo attempted to deceive the referee by simulating a foul by Leandro Paredes.

What was, for Swiss coach Murat Yakin, an injustice, was nothing more than the strict application of the rules.

Portuguese referee João Pinheiro, after a review of the VAR, applied the Mistaken Identity rule (a recent regulatory addition that allows for correcting sanctions) to withdraw the initial yellow card from the Argentine and expel Embolo for a second yellow card after his obvious simulation.

After the match, a visibly frustrated Murat Yakin, unable to acknowledge Argentina's superiority, exploded against the officiating and technology, claiming that his team was superior:

"For a moment, we had a fair match where we played football, and unfortunately, football did not win today. It is clear that we were harmed by the referee, it was significant for us... They introduced an unnecessary rule".

The coach, who admitted to being unaware of the applied rule, insisted oddly that "it was an innocent situation, it was not harmful, they should have let the ball keep rolling".

Despite Yakin's attempts at victimization, who went so far as to declare that "football lost today" and that his team did not deserve elimination, the Argentine National Team made the most of their one-man advantage in extra time.

With the brilliance of Lionel Messi and the effectiveness of their forwards, the Albiceleste sealed the deal with goals from Julián Álvarez in the 112th minute and Lisandro Martínez at the end of extra time.

As Switzerland bids farewell to the tournament trying to transform a historic milestone for them —reaching the quarterfinals for the first time since 1954— into a tale of dispossession, the Argentine National Team is already thinking about the classic against England next Wednesday. The victory not only broke a historic World Cup record, but also reaffirmed that, in the face of the hierarchy of champions, the excuses of the defeated have no place at the top of international football.
