In the wake of the defeat of the Argentine National Team against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, a strong controversy erupted on social media after videos and posts went viral showing foreign students studying at public universities in the country celebrating the result and mocking the country.
In response to this episode, which involved foreign students residing in Argentina, many of whom are enrolled in institutions like the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), thousands of users expressed their outrage and launched a campaign to sanction them or achieve their expulsion from the country.
Although the posts had been circulating since previous matches, the vast majority began to spread after Spain's 1-0 victory in extra time.
Mockery Against Argentina and the Malvinas
In this context, groups of students shared stories and tweets in which they celebrated the fall of the Argentine team. However, the controversy escalated quickly when some of that content exceeded the usual football banter.
The point of greatest controversy occurred when several of the posts included explicit mockery related to the Malvinas Cause, the memory of the fallen, and other national symbols.
On social media, the anger was not only directed at the content of the posts but also at the context in which they occurred. While foreign students have free access to public university education, funded by Argentine taxpayers, they then mock the country and its history.
